More than 100 million mice and rats are killed in US laboratories every year. They are subject to testing that causes stress, terror, anxiety, depression, and helplessness. The animals aren’t given the proper care that they need, and often die of loneliness.
Sometimes, pets are stolen from people and are illegally sold to scientists. This transition is cruel for both the pet and its owner.
Animals are subject to toxicology tests, which slowly poisons them to death. They’re also subject to tests on depression. They are put into beakers filled with water and observed as they frantically try not to drown. The animals do end up drowning. The state of panic that they’re in causes them to have a heart attack.
Harvard’s Wyss Institute made “organs-on-chips” that have human cells to mimic human organs and organ systems. The chips have been shown to replicate human diseases, drug effects, and human physiology more accurately than animal experiments do. Ceetox created a way to test the possibility of a substance to cause a skin allergy using MatTek’s EpiDerm Tissue Model, which is a 3D skin model that copies important traits of regular human skin. The tissue model replaces the need for animals to be used for testing allergic reactions.
The AWA (Animal Welfare Act) only covers larger, warm blooded animals like chimpanzees. Over 90% of animals aren't covered, like mice, rats, reptiles and other cold blooded animals, birds, and farm animals bread for research. For the 10% of animals that are covered, it sets low standards of their mental and physical health, and for their handling and housing. Because so many animals aren't protected by the AWA, they aren't accounted for in the annual count. The government estimates that there is about 25 million animals used in laboratories, but because so many aren't counted, there's actually about 100 million.
